About Young Minds

Dedicated and Experienced Advocates

Young Minds Advocacy (est. 2012) is a nonprofit organization founded to address the number one health issue facing young people and their families—unmet mental health needs. Using a blend of policy research and advocacy, impact litigation, and strategic communications, we work to change attitudes towards mental illness and break down barriers to quality mental healthcare for young people and their families.

San Francisco is our home, but we have initiatives throughout California and the West. Our staff includes lawyers and community advocates with decades of combined experience with child-serving and mental health systems. Learn more about our work by watching the short video below or by visiting the Our Impact page.

Mental Health Matters!

17.1 million young people have or will have a diagnosable psychiatric disorder–that’s more than the number of young people who have cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined [1]And yet, many youth experiencing a mental health challenge feel like they have no one to talk to, no one who understands them, and nowhere to turn to get help.

Only 20% of young people with mental health challenges receive care, even fewer get effective treatment.

Growing up is hard enough. Add unmet mental health needs into the mix, and it can feel impossible–not just for young people, but also for their parents, siblings, friends, and communities.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

We know that when people are educated about the mental health needs of children and youth, attitudes change. With quality care and support, youth with mental health challenges can lead hopeful, fulfilling lives and can be successful members of society.  When attitudes change and young people have access to quality care, lives are saved.

We Serve Young People

All young people deserve quality mental healthcare! Young Minds Advocacy focuses on supporting low-income youth with serious mental health needs. The young people we serve typically are involved with multiple child-serving systems including:

  • Specialty Mental Health
  • Child Welfare
  • Juvenile Justice
  • Developmental Disabilities
  • Education
  • Healthcare
  • Substance Use

Young Minds’ expertise crosses system boundaries, allowing us to identify opportunities for cooperation among child serving agencies. When children’s systems work together to enhance the lives of young people, the entire community benefits.

We’re driving change for youth with mental health needs!
